Community outreach opportunities
To the members of the Phoenix Society of Gastroenterology:
My name is Tyler Aasen and I'm an internal medicine resident interested in GI. This month I am rotating through St. Vincent de Paul (free) clinic and got involved in a colon cancer screening project that is ongoing at the clinic.
The clinic basically got a grant for its patients to receive free FIT tests for colon cancer screening - they have had several positive FIT tests and have several patients in need of colonoscopies to follow-up on these results.
The clinic had planned to send the patients with positive test results to the Colon Cancer Alliance programs which offer colonoscopies at a very reduced rate of <$100, however, there have been problems with this and so far no patients have received a colonoscopy.
St Vincent de Paul is now seeking outpatient GI providers in town to see if they would be willing to provide one free/greatly reduced colonoscopy per month to this patient population. So far we have 1-2 providers who have agreed to do this but we would likely need a few more.
The GI provider would likely have to own their own endoscopy suite in order to make this happen to allow for write offs and to avoid other payment issues with staff.
The patient population at this free clinic is almost entirely Spanish speaking and all of them have no insurance.

The medical director there who started the program is Dr. Maurice Lee. Contact the Medical Clinic for more information.
Thanks so much for your time, and we greatly appreciate your help!
